History
Wilson's Transport was established at Milton,
South Otago in 1952 and since that time has
maintained a proud history of service to the
Otago region and beyond. The initial focus of the
Company was the cartage of general goods and the
spreading of lime and fertiliser.
Buoyed but its success in those areas, the
Company was then able to tender for larger
contracts, for example, when the local power
board began expanding its electricity service to
areas thus far without electricity, Wilson's
Transport won the contract to cart thousands of
power poles all over the power board's catchment
area. At about the same time the Government
lifted the rail protection clause from 30 to 40
miles which put Milton in the enviable position
of being able to reach the stores in Dunedin with
local produce and return with backloads.
Milton was predominantly a service town for
surrounding farms and when bulk fertiliser became
big business and Wilsons Transport was handling
massive tonnages to aerial topdressers, and its
own spreaders – the most modern available
in New Zealand at the time.
The eighties and nineties saw further
expansion and diversification. Changes brought
opportunities and these allowed the Company to
broaden its base.
Today Wilsons Transport has grown to encompass
an extended network of transport services
throughout the South Island of New Zealand.
Our service offerings have expanded to include
strategic partnerships and alliances with several
industry partners in a number of specialised
activities.
Our focus on employing quality staff to
deliver quality transport services has been
instrumental in creating many of the
opportunities we have today.
This focus continues to be our “NUMBER
1” priority.
